My bath has been working for a lon time, but recently the water has been draining out as fast as it is going in! The plug looks like it is sealed but on further examination, I found that it was not attached to the plughole. Putting a bathmat over it does not work. Please help!

Gideon - gidyin - good one, methinks.

Where's the water going, down the waste pipe or under the bath?

I think its just going down the waste pipe.
Don't think, feel. It is like a finger pointing to the Moon.

Don't concentrate on the finger or you'll miss all that heavenly glory.

Whoops, got carried away there.

Don't think, investigate properly.
If it's going down the waste pipe it is either going down the plughole or the overflow. Any other exit point would take it under the bath.

Yes, it is definitely going down the waste pipe. I think there is something wrong with the seal on the plug

Renew the ring. Most decent independant plumbers merchants will have a selection.

The problem I have is that the plug, when attempting to make the bath water tight sits on a somewhat strange plastic cage thing. I guess the cage is there to trap hair before it disappears down the pipe, which sounds terribly useful.
Trouble is, the cage - I believe - has become malformed and so is not presenting an entirely flat base on which the plug can sit.

When I wiggle the plug around in its down position it has a distinct ability to rock from one particular side to the other. I took my screwdriver to the offending plastic cage and attempted to bash it down but to no avail. Should I take a sharp edge to what must be the one/two proud parts of the cage, on which the plug sits or is there an official way to get such a plastic cage, replace it and not feel like quite the cowboy fixer I shall be if I quite literally smash the offending plastic away?

Kind regards
Chris (first time poster and reader btw)

Hi Chris , sounds like a strange one - can you post a pic of the cage, does the plug come right out maybe pulling the cage with it - use a bit of force, not too much
