Bathroom wall surface

Our bathroom needs renovation and my contractor insists on using plasterboard rather than tile backer boards around the bath/shower area where i'd like him to tile over.
Is plasterboard a better surface for tiling on directly than backer boards?

Given the choice, go for a cement board.
