There's a light switch in my bedroom which doesn't do anything (but is live), as the original light fitting is long gone. I'm thinking about the best way to neaten up...
Can I safely shorten & push the lighting flex back under the floorboards and terminate with a 3 core connection box? There are some water pipes around the place.

What's happened to the cable that fed the missing light fitting?

Not really, mystery live wires are dangerous. You might know about it, but others who work on the property in the future won't. You should trace the cable back to the junction box or ceiling rose that it comes from and remove it completely along with the cable that went to the light fitting if it's still there.

BTW, usually cables run down to the switch from the ceiling above, not up from the floor below. There are exceptions to this sometimes especially in flats but they're not common.

I suspect it still exists but is hidden by the false ceiling.

Even if I label it as being live and its old function? Tracing would be ideal (actually reinstating the light fitting would be ideal) but that may need to wait a while.

It's a ground floor flat, so probably an exception as you say.
