"bleedin" rads

sorry to sound dead thick but why does the heating need to be off to bleed the rads?

I think you will find the reason is that as air comes out, it is replaced by cold water from the header tank. this cold water goes directly into the boiler, the boiler being hot will not take to kindly to cold water (it may split)

But don't quote me on that

I think its also because if the pump is running the air tends to move about and you wont get it all out.
