you need to get dhw ntc checked to see if boiler modulates when stat turned down.Also get burner pressure checked as if way out can cause localised hot spots in heat exchanger breaking away bits of the primary h/exchanger reulting in noise-ie kettling.

13 years later, I'd guess he'd have either had a new boiler or moved by now, or both!
