Boot up problem

Have a fiddle with the molex connector attached to the HD. I've seen a few bad connections/broken wires which cause this type of issue.

Re-started my PC to see what happens.

The bios did line by line, stating it had found eveything, although the last few lines went so quick it was impossible to read.

Then went to next blank screen and just the cursor blinking, no text to say anything at all.

On the 4th attempt I selected the 'select which drive to boot from' menu, selected the HD and it booted first time.

Don't know whether this was coincidence, or maybe that it is not always knowing which drive to boot from

Hm, yes, there isn't enough information yet to say whether or not the things you're observing are just coincidence.

IMHO you need to build up a record of the pattern of behaviour by noting at least the following, each time the PC fails to boot:

1. Whether or not the drive is spinning.
2. Whether or not your Maxtor drive was 'found' during POST.

You can do the latter quite easily with a DVR, which is a feature that most digital still cameras also now have.
