I had to remove the old boxing round the bathroom pipes to repair the toilet and most of it is rotten anyway.
I've bought some 9mm MDF and plan to cut everything to shape.

At present there are battens on the back wall to support the top panel, and battens on the floor to support the side panels.
Do I need an extra batten where the side and top MDF panels meet each other?

Personally i would, although this is more of a genral diy question rather than related to plumbing.

Personally i wouldn't use MDF in a bathroom as it doesn't react to contact with water very well. All it takes is a bit of moisture for it to swell and mis shape.

Ply wood would be much more suitable in my opinion.

The mdf edge will show and look naff. L profile ramin mouldings smarten it up.

Wouldn't marine ply be better?

If you are cutting it yourself it's bound to go a bit wobbly even with a steady hand. You'll need to trim the edges, as Chris R says, to make it neat.

If this is the boxing that is similar to a small step along the skirting board. I have seen pvc window boards used and the top piece had the rolled edge, which was left unsealed for inspection. It looked lovely when finished. Definately depends on how much cutting out you have to do and cash to spend.
