Hi there. I've had some plans agreed which will require what I've learnt is called bricklaying over-hand. There will be no access granted from next door. The thing is the architect said "oh that won't be a problem, they'll just build it overhand" but now a builder has said they can't due to health and safety regs. So what is the answer, can it be done? Next, will the quality suffer?

Many thanks.

overhand bricklaying, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

should be outlawed.

that's my opinion anyhow.

As above, it is very difficult and brickies don't like it but 'health & safety' or more specifically the 'Manual handling regulations 2002' does not preclude this. As long as the elements being lifted are not to heavy i.e bricks as opposed to 7n blocks, there is no reason it can't be done.

I'd suggest that your builder is using that as an excuse, afterall, work is plentiful so why do anything that is a bit difficult. I'd talk to someone else.

What is the reason access cannot be obtained via next door? Is it a despute or do they have a conservatory? If it is a despute, it may be worth having a chat with them and inform them that the work will be carried out regardless using the aforementioned 'overhand' method but it would be in there best interest to allow access as overhand working quite often if not as pretty as could be expected if working normally.

If I were them, I'd allow access rather than having to look at scruffy brickwork for evermore, which is what they may be faced with.

Thanks Colin_p so I can see from what you are saying that the brickwork working overhand is likely to be poorly finished. Many thanks.
