I have just changed a 2 gang switch to a 2 gang dimmer switch. One of the fittings running 5 - 50W halogen spots runs fine. The other fitting that has a wire wound transformer running 8 - 20w 12v LV halogen capsules buzzes loudly unless it's off or fully on. Any ideas for reasons/solutions out there?

Not all transformers are suitable for dimming. What type of transformer(s)do you have exactly?

Dimmers also have a minimum rating. What type of dimmer switch do you have too?

sounds like the transformer for the smaller lights is not suitable for dimming

Hi RJB

I took the fitting down and had a look..... no name on the transformer but the info on the label was as follows: Model No A2321012S
PRI 230V
SEC 12V-210VA
17.5A YEL YEL
Ring Core 99E
Made in Taiwan

No mention of dimming so maybe that means it can't be done.
The switch was Wylex made and behind the frontplate and each switch was a 'box' with its own coiled wire arrangement. I had returned it to B&Q before your post but I dont remember any specific rating on it other than a written explanation that it was good for mains and low voltage fittings.
