Hello All

I have an old Stelrad WRS 460 gas boiler in my 1930s house. The boiler is serviced annually by BG and is always deemed to be running well.

This winter the daily initial fire up has been accompanied by a loud "whoop" and what sounds like the pump straining mightily, all loud enough to wake the household! The straining noise reduces to background levels after a couple of minutes. Subsequent boiler fire ups are unremarkable. Any ideas as to cause and cure please?

Unfortunately without being there to hear this 'whoop' it is nigh impossible to comment.

Perhaps you could get up and prepare for this first 'fire up' by listening to the pump with a screwdriver to the pump and the other end to your ear.

If this proves fruitless, then move on to the boiler and try to pin point the source of noise.
