Cable inside 108kW shower '4mm silicone engineering' ???

When you start connecting directly to the end of a heating element the heat conducting up the cable can cause an issue.

Yes I agree with you, but given that the original cable has not been particularly successful, I cannot see much point in replacing like for like. :)
 
You'll probably find the original was subject to the heat from a fault (I'd supspect a bad connection) which which resulted in temperatures hotter than even the silicone is rated for.
