a mil being more usually known (this side of the pond) as a thou - ie. a thousandth of an inch.

the standard unit of size in most cases is the mil foot, a wire will have a unit size if it has a diameter of 1 mil and a length of 1 foot.
its found in American and English wire tables,avoiding decimals.
