This probably sounds a strange question, and I don't know if it's just how our tray was installed that's the issue. But is it ok to leave the cover off a 90mm shower trap and leave just the bucket part in the waste, ours is like the one pictured below

The reason I asked is, no matter how clean the cover is, the flow of water seems bad at clearing. Even though the shower and waste are classed as high flow.

When in the shower, soap gathers in a big pool by the waste and takes agges to clear, and if finished in the shower most soap seems to just pool and sit and then just created soap scum because the soap just sits.

The cover is clean, in fact I've not long bought a new one, but always seemed to be like this.

The second i take the cover out, all water and soap instantly go straight down the drain. So it is the cover that's causing the issue.

So I wondered if I am OK either just leaving it off, but leaving the bucket part in, to catch anything that we wouldn't want going down the drain but would be heavy enough for the bucket to just catch.

Or are there any other type of traps/covers than this type? I don't think I have seen any other types than these standard ones?
Our tray has small bumps around the waste hole to keep a trap up a bit.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks
James

It's not the cover that's causing the issue, it's usually the fall in the waste pipe under the shower. Basically there isn't enough flow out of the shower through the trap to draw away the soap properly. See it all the time where trays have been installed with little or no fall in the waste pipe.

Leaving the top off, negates the water seal from the trap and can allow drain smells to come up through the waste system. The dip tube in the top, when it sits in the cup of water coupled with the rubber o ring around the top as it fits into the waste, creates the seal.
