Car warranty query

11 year old Honda Civic 1.8 petrol auto, so has i-vtec engine.

Bought it last year and took the option of an extended warranty as was decent price and seemed to cover quite a lot.

It's time to renew, however on closer inspection of the terms & conditions, I saw this re the engine and what's included/excluded in the cover:

Engine: All major internal moving parts of the engine including; crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, connecting rods, balance shafts, gears, oil pump and including the cylinder head, engine block and liners (but excluding; variable camshaft timing units (Vanos), chains, sprockets, tensioners, burnt out valves and valve seats).

The bit I've put in bold made me wonder if the cover is actually worth it given it's an i-vtec engine and the parts in bold aren't covered.

What do you think?

In my experience, these warranties are worthless. They are usually a mechanical breakdown warranty and not a mechanical wear warranty. They part usually has to break to be covered by the warranty and then they’ll want every servicing and repair receipt from the day it left the showroom…..

Thought the last year the Honda extended warranty could be bought for was 10 years since first registration.

Generally not worth the paper they are printed on, very restrictive & the last one I had required the car to be serviced (at a VAT registered garage) every 6k miles or 6 months whichever came the sooner !

Most claims are rejected due to a 'general wear & tear' clause & garages can be reluctant to carry out repairs as the warranty company won't pay their full labour rate.

I shouldn't have said extended warranty, it's not from Honda, it's a generic used car warranty.

Typically I don't buy such warranties, however when I bought the car the price for one years cover was quite reasonable, somewhere around £150 I think.

Not had a quote for this year, however because the car is now 11 years old (i.e. over 10), the level of cover offered is less.

It was the lack of cover for the variable timing components that made me wonder if it's even worth it.

Yeah on balance I'm not going to bother. Given the age of my car I'd be getting one of their lowest cover levels and I suspect the age would add weight to their wear and tear clause.
