we have just had the ceiling plastered in our bedroom. (used to be a garage).

in the ceiling was a metal support. (1 inch wide)

anyway the metal has begun to rust and mark the plaster.

is there anything i can seal it with before painting that will stop the rust seeping through.

many thanks gav

I hope the ceiling (and the metal thing) is well insulated above, otherwise you will get condensation in that spot which will cause more rust.

Was the steel embedded in the plaster?

Steel (including nails) in plaster or filler should always be pritected with oil-based paint otherwise it will rust and stain. Platerboard nails are galvanised to prevent thenm rusting while the plaster is new and wet.

If you paint the stained plaster with Aluminium Wood Primer it will seal almost anything.

Then a coat or two of While oil Based Undercoat to blot out the metallic grey primer; then your usual emulsion over that.

thanks for your reply. its nice to get good advice when i dont know what im doing

yes the steel is embedded in the plaster.

i will get the paints you suggested.

thanks again gav :)
