Central Heating not working

Hi all,

I need a bit of advice if you dont mind... I am an engineer in the Royal Navy and away from home at the moment and my wife has just informed me that our heating is not working.

I know the basics so i asked her a few questions... We have a a Potterton Prima B (fitted with the house in 2000), and it controls both the heating and the hot water via a programmer.

The hot water is apparently fine but the heating is not. I have asked her to check if the thermostat is clicking on and off and it is, nothing happens at the boiler though when she does this. The pump also does not start and the diverter valve does not seem to be operating. Is there anything i can get her to check to see if it is the diverter or the pump?

If the hot water is ok then chances are the pump is fine.
If you have one or either of these then it's a good bet that the synchron motor has failed. This goes against my normal fault finding as it's a guess, but with little info that's the best on offer at the moment.
I would always check that motor first on being presented with that scenario. View media item 30391 View media item 38425

Thanks Nan9, i agree that the info was very limited but that is all that i was given. It is hard to diagnose what at the end of the phone... lol. Is there any way that she can check the diverter as shown in the picture? if not i will have to take the plunge and get her to buy a new one,,,

As I said, my thoughts were only guesswork. Your best bet is to call someone in to diagnose and repair.
