Hi there,

I would greatly appreciate some advice. My radiators upstairs are red hot whilst the downstairs ones are cold. I've looked into balancing the system and this does not help. I've also tried bleeding all of the radiators which does not help either. The pump seems to be rotating by unscrewing the bleed screw which causes the screw to rotate.

My question is, is the pump defective and therefore not circulating the water well enough to the radiators further along the system? Or could there be another problem?

Many thanks in advance!

David.

Well it is almost certainly a problem with the pump, you can tell if the pump is working by (A) listening to it (B) feeling the outer housing which should be vibrating slightly (C) check the inlet and outlet pipes on this by feeling them, they should be the same. However see my question about hot water.

Do you have hot water and is yours a combi boiler, I mean by that do you have a hot water cylinder or not. If you do have a cylinder is the water hot? If it is and it is a fully pumped system the diverter may have stuck and is directing the boiler supply of hot water to this only and your upstairs radiators are just being fed by gravity. try these and get back.

What type of system do you have - in terms of control valves ? If it's an S-plan (separate 2 port vales for each zone), and upstairs & downstairs are separate zones, then it could be something as simple as a zone valve (or more likely it's motor) failed.
