Could hear water running in to the header tank for the central heating system, lifted lid and it was hot water returning

No, its pumping over.

Will cause huge corrosion problems in due course if not resolved.

Can be caused by too high pump speed, partial blockage in cold feed/open vent connection, or poor system design.

Either way you must get it fixed. Often not easy for a Diyer to resolve, btw.

Did you have the heating on at the time? Where was the water running from? More than likely water due to expansion.

water coming from the 22mm pipe running in to header tank

Thanks, we had a new boiler, pump and motorised valve recently
pump is on setting 2, tank t/sat is set at 60

I will turn the pump down to setting 1 and change the sat setting to 55

But I recall them turning up the pump to get the water to the last radiator

cheers

As said above do not touch the cylinder stat that is fine. More likely to be due to a blockage. Was system flushed due to new boiler installation

If it's pumping over it's wrong. Get it seen to in your own interest.
