If changing a trv and the radiator tail is 1/2inch does the rad. Tail need changing or not? Thanks

Not if it fits the new valve and is in good condition.
1. The only thing likely to be 1/2" about it is the 1/2" BSP thread which screws into the radiator.
2. If you mean the part after the threaded shank, then:
2a. If designed for compression fit valves is will be 15 mm diameter.
2b. If designed for union fit valves, then it could be 1/2", 15 mm, or any similar value in diameter.
