I am trying to put a new light fitting up in the kitchen, but, one of the screws is chewed, any ideas on how to get it out ? oh it's a flat head screw

A lot depends on how much of the screw is protruding.If its in the ceiling rose its easier to break the rose. Then tap the screw slightly side to side to loosen it a little.Now use 'mole grips' on the head and turn.
