Chimeny - Is it nesscesary to line a chimney??

I am thinking of getting a wood burning stove placed in my exsiting fire place, but the question i have is do i need to get the chimney lined?
I know it can prevent chimeny fires, but without it being lined doesnt mean you are going to have a fire. Is lining a chimney a building regulation or just advisable?

Having seen the results at a friends house where a wood burner set fire to the chimney and subsequently half the house I check the existing chimney very carefully.
