A customer I am working for has had an inset wood burner installed and had some of the chimney breast replastered. After using the burner a few times the plaster at the bottom is cracking. Is there a special type of plaster that should have been used to deal with the heat/expansion/contraction?

you can get heat proof plaster products which are used where a lot of heat is localised such as inset wood burners.
that aside it could be a case of the wood burner being used to soon, and not allowing enough time for the plaster to dry out, hence maybe the cracking.would assume there would have to be a tremendous ammount of heat for that to occur.

either way its a fair mistake to make .

good make of heat resistant plaster here
