We are renovating our early 1900's staircase and want oak newel posts and handrails for a more modern feel. The handrails and spindles i have done a few times before but i have always retained the original newel posts.

I don't want to replace the newel posts as they are sound, in good condition and its a load of unnecessary work so i have looked at cladding them but the "off the shelf" options are very expensive and basic so i am thinking why cant i just clad in solid oak strips, sanded down after maybe rounded off slightly with a router to each edge.

Has anyone gone down this route before i make a fool of myself and have you got any pictures of the results and the method used.

I was thinking of something along the lines of https://www.loveskirting.co.uk/bead...t-square-edge-beading-strip-100mm-x-7mm-p1119 I would rather 3-5mm but cant seem to locate anywhere.
