This is in an industrial unit I visited yesterday, which is actually used as office space.

The carpet is wine red - but it obviously hasn't been properly cleaned in many years (if ever), so the walked on areas are literally black with ingrained grime. The carpet is stuck down and there is probably over 1000sq foot of it, so it would cost a bit to rip it up and replace. It won't be oily or anything - just usual muck off shoes. It isn't actually worn though, as foot traffic is very light.

Wondering whether anyone has managed to resurrect any seriously filthy carpet, and if so, what sort of kit/chemicals were used?

Thanks!

You might want to hire an industrial carpet cleaner (as opposed to a small domestic model) and try that, although it may require a couple of applications to work (an it may not workwell enough). I've seen these used on hotel reception room jobs with varying degrees of success. Just remember that in large areas such as this you may well need one or two industrial heaters and/or site dehumidifiers to dry the floor out afterwards. Testing on a limited area may give you a good idea of how good the results are. Google "hss carpet cleaner" as a starter and maybe talk to other local hire shops as well .
