Hi, I am replacing my old water tank for a coffin style plastic one. Can the outlet to the shower pump and hot water cylinder go in the bottom of the tank to make the most of the capacity? They always seem to be in the side, is this to avoid a whirlpool like you get when a bath empties?

Outlets in the bottom could make for difficulties supporting the base of the tank properly. Maintenance access to the fittings may become an issue. The outlets may pick up any grit and limescale deposits carried into the tank which normally stay there undisturbed.

It is usual practise to place the outlet feeding the hot system above the level of the one feeding the cold, so you don't get scalded if the tank does run dry.

If the tank does tend to run dry, and your mains supply is adequate, consider fitting a larger float valve (3/4" instead of 1/2"), or two 1/2" float valves.

Maybe even consider fitting two tanks, coupled together to increase the storage capacity, with the inlet(s) mounted in one, and the outlet(s) in the other to prevent stagnation in either tank.
