Comrade Bolshevic Boris and the Tories - we like Russian donors

As we see from my earlier survey link, a small proportion of the population opposes public ownership of railways by the British public. Dum is one of them.

He does not comment on public ownership of our railways by foreign governments or investors.

Government direct subsidy of the railways is around £5 billion per year, an increase of over 200% since privatisation

Between 1995 and 2018, rail tickets on average went up 20% in price, taking into account inflation.

So were a lot of union bound industries, it does not mean railways should not be renationalised.

Network rail is already nationalised anyway, its the train operators that are private....well state owned really, just foreign states.

It is odd when people say nationalisation doesn't work because in the distant past is was not as good as it is now.
The world has moved on, things have got better. Obviously BR was a bit naff in the past when the country was poor and still recovering from 2 world wars.

when the country was poor and still recovering from 2 world wars.
Which year did it suddenly recover from two WW and become rich?..Renationalised industries might be a good principle but in the real world of the UK they are always under invested...That will not change anytime soon.

So you think UK politicians and govt are crap, but you want them to run everything?

I don't know, but my point is, when it was British Rail we were still running old diesel trains and carriages with slam doors. Trains and the services would have improved with better tech regardless of whether it was private or public. But people seem to think that it was not great before 1994 because it was state owned. You only need to look at Switzerland and Japan to see how good state owned train services can be. And most commuters know how crap the current service is.

Renationalisation now only happens when private companies have taken their profits and left the taxpayer with the debts...

So indeed public services are under invested in order that the private owners/shareholders can grab the loot and run if it all goes pear shaped!

But maybe you could tell us why many other European countries manage to do it differently, and not just 'in principle'?

Surely it couldn't be to do with that 'social model' that the ruling elite in the UK seems to hate so much?

Yes,but our govt never invests enough in rail, and Beecham fettled it good in the 60s.Have as much new technology as you like,,If govt do not spend enough on stuff they run,it will never be great.

What i don't understand is how Brexiters want to leave Europe, want to take back control of our industry and economy, but do not want to take back our railways from the European companies and governments that run it. It makes no sense! You either want to take back control, or you don't. Nationalisation is the ultimate way to take back control in a global / multinational economy.
