I’m building some brick and paving slab steps in the garden, and need a concrete footing.

The footing will need to measure 1200 by 900mm and be 130mm deep.

I think I need about another 130mm of compacted sub base under the footing.

What I’m trying to work out is the quantity of materials I need to buy.

My local builders yard sells 20kg sacks of crushed limestone 20mm to dust, which I could use as the sub base.

They also sell 40kg premixed sand and gravel bags for the concrete.

I already have 25kg cement which will presumably be more than enough.

I’m trying to work out how many 20kg bags of limestone and 40kg bags of sand and gravel I will need. I know I need about 0.15 cubic meters each of sub base and concrete, but that doesn’t seem to get me anywhere as everything is sold by weight.

In terms of 25kg bags of sub base, I’d usually work it out as a bulk “1 tonne” bag is about 40 25kg bags. Others may have a better way…
