Confussed ( ithink) with screw sizes.... please help!?!

I think I'm a bit confused with the different screw sizes out there....

Can i assume that a (metric) 6 X 65 will be 65mm long, and the HEAD diameter is 6mm (rather than the shank)?

ALSO, with imperial the gauge is the head diameter, and the length is the length?
 
Cheers, I guess from the size of the pilot and clearence holes it'll be the size of the shank, including the pitch then!

Most helpfull, have printed this out and kept it for future reference!
 
Screw length is measured from under the head to the tip, except for countersunk screws. These include the head, because they are supposed to finish flush with whatever they are fixing. Other head patterns are designed to sit proud of the surface.
