Hi,

In the process of renovating a house and during my exploration have found a couple of things i would consider unsafe but just wondering what the standing is as far as regs go.

First and most worryingly is that a prior owner appears to have connected a double socket upstairs to the downstairs ring main, fairly odd considering the cables are close to each other in the void.

Also for some reason there are various junction boxes which i have no issue with, but in several locations there is 6mm twin and earth spliced together using "choc block" are these even safe for this type of cable given the current it could supply???

I have just fitted a new crabtree CU and put the sockets on an RCD and i'm fairly happy with electrics.

Am i allowed to to replace these choc blocks with junction boxes without upsetting the part P regs? Am i allowed to re-wire the socket onto the correct ring?? I am not going to be adding any new circuits just tidying and correcting things which i believe are unsafe, is there anything to stop me doing this???

Cheers
Lee

And how do you think you are going to get caught if you do it anyway?
Has anybody been done for doing DIY without Part P??

If you have the option then better to remove the added wiring and put the socket on upstairs. Its not a hanging offence like its - assuming there is no connection between the two rings!

Chock blocks must be in a suitable enclosure NOT taped up
These blocks must be of suitable capacity to carry the current load. You dont say what this is? 30A, 40A??
Same goes for junction boxes
All screwed joints must be accessible. If they are hidden in the void it is better to crimp them and sleeve the joint with heat shrink sleeving

I'm interested in this comment, you seem to be concerned about Part P, I am assuming that as you have replaced the CU that you are aware that this is notifiable under Part P. Did you notify?
You say you are happy with the electrics. Did you check:
Main earth, main bonding and supplementary bonding?
Insulation resistance for each circuit
EFLI for each circuit
RCD trip times

Yes provided you comply with the relavent wiring and safety regulations.
Yes
No

I didn't notify, one of the leccies from work notified when he came out to do all the checks and replace the 100A supply fuse and tie.
