Hi, as you will see from the image I have an unsightly fence behind our new decking and wanted to replicate the first image.
I'm looking for some advice on what timber to use to get the same effect but still make it affordable, budget is about £120

Do you mean the brown fence or the green fence?

who does the fence belong to?

How many metres length of the fence do you want to spread your £120 over?

Shared ownership with neighbours. Was going to fit it over and leave the fence in place, maybe fix to concrete fence posts

You could use tilers batten to replicate the appearance you want. Sometimes you can buy seconds or leftovers at reduced price. It is treated but you would want to use fence stain before assembly. You could also treat the fence behind, to hide it, and use dark brown masonry paint on the concrete posts and gravel boards to make them blend in. I think you will need to add battens to the existing fence panel edges to bring them out far enough to nail on your battens. Drilling pilot holes will reduce cracking and splitting.

You could also consider taking out the panels and re-making the fence with decking boards. I recently repaired a fence using decking boards in place of panels, you need about 14 lengths to make the height when you have concrete gravel boards. I am very pleased with the appearance and sturdiness of the result. There will be wastage as you will need pieces about 1800mm long.

Thanks John for detailed response, struggling to find tilers battens, would roof battens be the same sort of thing from a size point of view?

different name, same thing.

In the region of 25x38mm though there are different sizes. You want Pressure Treated ones, which may look greenish.

For small purchases, I think my "end of range" merchant charges about 50p/metre in various lengths. I used to buy them for fence repairs and garden jobs.

Don't drill the concrete posts as they might crack.

Hi John
Jewsons are doing the roof battens in 4.2m lengths for just £1.30 inc vat, this was the shortest they do?

You could use the 4.2 M lengths in one go, cut down to the correct length, if you did as John said and 'cross-battened' to bring the vertical fence battens out to the same as the posts.
You could use your off-cuts to do this.
Assuming a 15mm gap between each horizontal batten and a batten of 25X38, you'll need about 34 battens, assuming a height of the fence to be about 1.8 M (1.8 M ÷ (.038+.015)) = approx 34
