Trying to put up coving, have got a plastic mitre box from Homebase and mitre saw, two issues:-

1. I cannot cut an external corner properly - the only way to get both left and right coving bits on the corner is to push the whole coving up, such that it is then only 80mm on the wall (should be 83mm) and 86mm on the ceiling (should be 83mm). What am I doing wrong?

2. Our ceiling appears to be at an uneven height, which means that the coving will not tightly fit against the whole length of the wall.

We've bought the Gypsum Gyproc Cove 127 83mm, link attached:-

Because corners are rarely square and ceilings rarely straight you have to make adjustments, the box will cut at precise angles that don't fit an imprecise corner.
A few mm difference won't be detrimental to the job, so pack out any gaps with the adhesive or use filler afterwards. I use artex for coving but always prime any 'filling' with gardz to stop it cracking. Also try and use single sections as much as you can, if you do have to put joints in fill them out about 6 inches each side.

A mitre box should cut both internal and external corners for both sides !!!
Was it a coving mitre box or a wood cutting mitre box. The coving ones allow you to turn the coving upside down whilst keeping the angle correct for the cut.

As the previous poster said use the adhesive to fill any gaps in joints or for the unevenness of your ceiling then use a small flat bladed screwdriver to scrape away the excess and on the corners sand with a fine sandpaper. You may have to repeat several times dependent on the quality of finish you want.
