There are new polyfiller products on the market that boast that they reduce the need for plastering. I have used such products to repair damaged walls. However when it dries, it cracks. Is there a way to prevent this?

Its because it shrinks when it dries out.
Might need a couple of coats, but leave it proud, so you can sand it down when it has dried properly.
