Is the mortar actually falling away, or is it just traditional soft lime mortar? (you can often pick this stuff out with your fingernail). Although the brickwork as a whole may look a mess, it doesn't mean to say it is going to collapse.
What is the state of the stack above the roof - that is more significant and may possibly need repointing.
Presumably you don't use the fireplaces below as there appear to be a few holes here and there.
Thanks for the reply, a fair bit has crumbled away, the left hand feeder as you look at the picks has a new flue liner, but the right hand one hasn;t and we do use fires. Not checked the chimney stack outside. There is a brick that came out of the chimney and I'm reluctant to go prodding about on the rest of it. Would the whole face need re building or is there another solution, I appreciate that without seeing it first hand its hard to comment, cheers.
