Hi,

Just been up in our loft and notice that one of the chimney stacks seems to be crumbling quite a bit.

I am thinking of re-pointing this myself. I would get a builder in but we have just finished renovating the whole house with new cream carpets etc so would like to do it myself as won't have to worry about any mess!

It seems the process should be :

1. rake out old mortar (1/3rd of the way)
2. spray with water
3. repoint it where required - may be quite deep in places as its crumbled a lot.
4. there are a couple of missing bricks so will replace them.

I would do in small sections, from testing most of the bricks seem secure still.

My main queries are :

Is this a good idea to do myself?
Likelyhood of it all crumbling a lot worse when I start messing with it!

Also is this mortar going to be good enough? Ideally want mix in the bag as can do it in the loft so would make so much mess

thanks

That wooden beam looks 40% rotten in places, has the leak been fixed? Flashing, pointing, tiles? A call to the insurance company may be in order. Not a job i would want to tackle as a diy'er
