They don't steal a nest but instead find an unattended nest with eggs, chuck one out and lay one of their own.
The nest owner then returns and probably is happy that there are the same number of eggs and does not bother that one has strangely changed its colour.
They then continue to hatch the eggs and feed the fledglings until the are ready to fly the nest.
Cuckoos are very lazy birds! Thy have all the fun with their mates and then leave bringing up the offspring to someone else.
