cutting a standard staircase

Hi

recently purchased my first house, and i the throws of renovating it, i would like to know if i can buy a standard 2600mm(floor-floor) rise staircase and trim 5cm of each end trim the treads and risers and lower it to 2500mm, this may be a silly question wanted to put my mind at rest and really.

If you're going to cut the top and bottom off a prefabricated staircase, you'll end up with uneven rises at each end. This will create two trip hazards: the rises should be equal throughout the staircase.
