It's important to buy a decent glass cutter, it's so easy with the right tool. I have the oil fed glass cutter available from ebay. I'm doing lesson on lead light window & stain glass, if I were you I would get some old glass from a glass shop skip 
old door etc and practise until you're confident, do not press the glass too hard, you will get used to sound of the wheel cutting the glass. I'm lucky my next door retired neighbour is teaching me There's plenty of Glass Forum out there, one here
