Hi,

I am installing wet underfloor heating which involves a continuous 16mm pipe looping between and then across all my joists. Is it an issue if I notch the top of all of the joist by 20mm next to the wall?

As joist will be covered by 18mm ply flooring an alternative would be to loop pipes across top of joists and cut away ply next to the wall and cover with metal plate but this would be a lot of work

If joists are deeper than 100mm then you may notch 12.5% of joist.
Notch should be approx 1/12 of span from edge and no more than 1/4.
( In an ideal world, but this is not always possible) ;)

If you drill them on the centre line of joist the hole can be 25% of joist depth.

Don't forget to put insulation underneath pipes.

Yes it's fine to notch the joist, but protect the pipe.

I assume you are using metal plates and need to get from one joist run to the next

Current building regs say that you may notch any joist only in an area between 7% and 25% of it's unsupported span, to a maximum depth of one eighth of the depth of the joist. This means that, for example, on a 160mm joist, you may notch out 20mm in the prescribed area.

Use hair felt (available from any plumbers' merchants) to protect the pipe in the notches.

Aye I know, just backing you up... although 7% is closer to 1/14 that 1/12, but that's nitpicking I know
