I'm selling my house and the surveyors coming on monday so I want to make sure he doesn't find any damp. I read somewhere that it's possible to detect damp in walls using a multimeter set on millivolts so I tried this and I did get a peak reading of 56 mv on a small section of wall that shows slight signs of damp,I also tried this out on a wall that is definately bone dry and there was no reading. Is this a true indication that there id damp or should I just but a damp detector.

Damp meters are notoriously unreliable and depend on skill and experience in interpreting the results.

I don't see what good you will do by testing it yourself if he's coming on Monday - if it is damp, you can't cure it in time.

I know I cant cure it in time if the damp is outside acceptable limits for a 100 year old house but as I know the surveyor is a mate of the bloke who's buying my house I know he will be going over my house with a fine toothed comb and possibly exagerating some things to get some money off. Any way I decided to go and buy a damp detector.
