Hi guys, we have a house which is approximately 110years old and has rubble-fill limestone walls which are between 500 and 600mm thick. Its probably no surprise, given the age of the property, that is has no damp proof membrane under the floors and no damp proof course in the walls. Generally we don't have a problem with damp, but in one area in the front room the wall does get slightly damp. I believe the cause of this is a concrete path which has been installed externall along the width of the house up against the house wall but leaving a 5mm(ish) gap between the concrete path and the house wall. When it rains, this gap inevitably fills with water and is held there, probably causing the damp problem??
I have now removed the external path and we intend to replace this with 20-30mm gravel and lower the external finished level to about 50mm below the internal floor area. Will doing this be enough to help stop the damp problem, or should I install something between the wall and the gravel to keep the water away from the wall?? If so, what is best to use, and how is best to install it?
