I have a damp patch on the interior of the front facing wall of my lounge. It is about 2 inches wide and starts at the skirting board and stops at about window sill level. The drainpipe is on the outside of that wall and the bathroom is above. The problem seems to increase after I have used the shower. Could it be a problem with the pipes, the pointing or something else? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

First thing to do is to check the outside gutter is clear and the top of the downpipe is not blocked with leaves etc and any waste pipe or hopper are in good working order and not leaking. Also check for brick pointing as well. Check the shower wall tile grout that are in good condition order and sealant around the shower tray plus the trap waste pipe is not loose and so on. Has the toilet cistern got a fine hairline crack maybe at the back? Have a good look around that has anything to do with water :!:

put your shower on and stand outside and see if theres a leak, but i doubt its that, you say it starts at the skirting and stops at the window sill. could it not start at the window sill and stop at the skirting. Check around the window and see if the seal has failed.

Thanks for your replies on this-much appreciated. I cannot see any obvious leakage from the shower when I look outside although I have noticed it seems particularly damp outside around the drainpipe-not noticeable before due to wet weather. The damp patch is at the side of the window-not actually at the window sill-sorry probably didn't make this too clear. Would it be best to have the plumbing checked first and then check if defective pointing is causing water to seep through. Thanks for your help

Basically you have to check everything! Is the outside window sill with the groove underneath in good condition, if not, that can seep rainwater underneath the sill and into your brickwork. As you says I would check the plumbing first.
