Leave aside the fact that people who are in the Forces or who have been in the Forces often find it difficult to think for themselves and cannot function without being told what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, one of the greatest military leaders of all time, is due to disembark at a set place along a railway line and it is your job as a marksman/sniper to kill him. You have a clear shot, the job couldn’t be easier. But unexpectedly Adolf Hitler also alights. You have an equally clear shot. You don’t have time to shoot both.

Who do you shoot? Rommel – thus obeying your orders but leaving the top man, or Hitler – arguably the greatest tyrant the world has ever seen, but face a court marshall for disobeying orders?

With hindsight, Hitler, for humanity's sake...sod the orders and court marshall.

What would you do, Notty?

Yeah, Hitler probably.

In World War 1 could you get executed if you disobeyed orders? Or was that just desertion?
