Dishwaher will not start !!

My dishwasher Whirlpool ADP 9516 will not start. When I turn it on the Start button just flashes but the programme does not start - can anyone help me ??

have a look at the instruction manual

Is the dishwater filling with water? ..if not it could be the solonoid valve at the back is faulty

Thanks for answering - firstly I've searched for the manual and couldn't find it and secondly I kept my finger pressed down on the start button for several seconds and the machine started up - so all's fine but still don't know what was wrong with it and why the button was flashing ?!
