disintegrating loft insulation

Hi everybody

I've read the threads on loft insulation but couldn't find an answer to my question.

I've just bought a house and found the loft insulation to be very old and disintegrated. I'm going to put new insulation in but is it essential for me to remove all the old stuff prior to laying the new insulation?

This would appear to be a very dirty and onerous task. I'd like to avoid it if possible.

I guess I'll have to decide whether it's of no use or some use !

I think I'll guage this by judging by the amount I'd have to clear out and how messy it will be !!!

Best to leave the old insulation there and top it up with new.

I agree with masona. Insulation does nothing, it is the air trapped within it which does the insulating, so adding some more will trap more air.
