Cos thats the key that you have on your number pad on the left of your keyboard. Plus x/x is perfectly legitimate notation for division.

But why

Are you serious? "/" is the symbol you use for a fraction, e.g. "1/2" for 'half', and has denoted division for, I suspect, abundant centuries, but certainly for longer than electronic calculators started using the symbol.
