Do I need a builder or an electrician?

Hi, apologies for the probably stupid question.....

I want to move the TV and AV kit from one side of the lounge to the opposite side, so I need some chanelling done - sky box inputs and cat 5 network channelled into concrete floor and various AV cables channelled into wall to new TV mount. I am doing a complete room refurb so not worried about the hassle and mess, want to get them properly hidden.

I just need someone to come in and cut the actual channels in the floor and wall before I put the cables in and get the plasterer round.

Who would do this? I am sure electricians do this all the time, but would a general builder do this (?cheaper)? Or do I need a specialist AV installer?

Also for the wall channelling to the TV, I am thinking of using brushed faceplate (like these http://www.wickes.co.uk/Electrospar...ate/invt/204733&temp=largeimage&layout=popups) at either end of an open channel to make it easy to change the cables in the future.....any thoughts on this anyone?

Thanks for any advice,
Chris

why cant you do it?

if its just for the channeling either can do it so can a labourer, but who ever does it it will cost you money, why not empty the room and hire an angle grinder, but do check the floors first (you havent got underfloor heating have you?)

Hi, thanks for replying.

To be honest, I've no genuine reason for not doing it myself, other than I would much rather pay someone who knows what they are doing and will do a good job than run the risk of botching it myself. I am happy to admit that my skills lie in other areas lol.

And when you say check the floors....what am I checking for and how do I check? It is a concrete ground floor from a 1980's house, surely there's nothing in the concrete?

(No underfloor heating!)

I was also thinking, that by the time I've hired a chaser/grinder, and an SDS+ drill and chisel, and some dust extraction equipment (quick look at HSS website tells me I will be looking at around £150 for weekend at least), I could get someone in to do it all for me for not much more....although that might be wishful thinking i guess....any thoughts anyone?

You will neeed to check that you are going to miss any water pipes that may run in your concrete floor either cold supply pipes or more likely central heating pipes. Hot water pipes can be detected by the warmth that they generate. Best to get a good metal detector to find where your pipes run.

It may be easier to run the cables up the wall and through the ceiling void.
