I have just bought a new cctv system for my building. But my neighbour has just informed me that as we are registered at companies house as a business, I need to register it before using.

Our building is totally residential but we are listed at companies house as a non-profit making business which is the management company we set up to run the place.

Does anyone know if I am required to register the cctv and also with whom? I can't find a link on line and the specialist shop who provided me with the cctv didn't mention a register.

Interesting point.
That said, it is your home, used for domestic and residential purposes. Therefore, apply the same criteria to the CCTV system, then no, you don't have to register.
Buy system through the company and use it for Business reasons then yes, you would have to register.

Tell the nosey git next door that he can't have access to any images of any billy burglars/scumbags recorded on his property.

Rubbish, just as long as you pop a sign up to say you are recording in case things go to court then no you dont have to register. As Atilla said tell your neighbour to keep his nose out.

The space where the cctv will go is common to the residents in my building. As freeholders, we all own our flats and co-own the common areas. I have managed to find this government link (below) which is very detailed and does offer registration which is £35 per year.

But I'm still unsure if I have to register the cctv for our building which is totally residential (although listed at companies house as a non-profit making business). I'll ring up the number given on the site tomorrow, but if anyone reading this post can clarify, please feel free to answer.

You've had the answer. Save yourself the call and more importantly, the money. Jobsworths will always tell you to register - it's a safe option for them.

Besides, look up how many people have been proscecuted for not registering and displaying warnings.

I rang the number given on the website. They say that although we're registered as a company, we are exempt from registration because all of our flats are residential and not business related.

Errr, but you'd been told that already.

If a system falls outside of the DPA, then you dont need a sign.

No signs needed for residential only cctv...

I would be wary if the cctv is covering any areas of the property that are used for business, do you store business property there? Are you protecting that also? Could open a can of worms possibly if a burglar tries to steal some business property and is caught on cctv, as they could claim your using the footage to protect business property, therefore your cctv was for business use (as well as residential) and ergo should have been registered.. Not a lawyer, but I would get it in writing from the ICO that it does not need to be registered if you have any business stuff protected by that cctv.
