Do I really need this many beams?

I have View media item 45820
I'm talking about the horizontal beams here in the picture above. They are about every 2 feet attached to every roof beam. I'm going to guess that they are to stop the roof flattening out but is it necessary to have them on every one or could I remove every other one?

The beams are there to reduce the stresses on the rafters. The rafters probably aren't spec'd to span ridge to wall plate.

If you put in a suitably designed purlin you could remove all of the beams.
