If installing an outside tap. And fitting a internal double check valve. Do I need to do anything with the little nut on the check valve? I think it's for draining down the check valve if needed
 
I think it's for draining down the check valve if needed
The one with the little nut/screw is called a verifiable check valve, the little nut is a test point used to confirm that the double check valve is working correctly. As suggested, not to be played with.
