drainage problem

we moved in to a house which is on a slight slope in march this year, water pools at the bottom of the garveled driveway and also at the back of the hous, the used to be a raised patio area which we have removed this weekend as we thought it wasnt helping the drainage but now we have a pool of water (the is a slight slight away from the house.

We are wondering how to improve the drainage on our land as the garden is pretty huge

I am of the opinion of either creating a herringbone drain system from the top of the garden , but i dont i dont know where i would drain it in to , or just digging the area outside the back of the house about 4 ft down and filling it with something like roadstone as the land is nasty solid clay.

thanks, ill need to drain whole garden. am a bit stumped as wot to do but any suggestions are appreciated
